In view of the recent calamity in Uttarakhand which left hundreds of pilgrims dead and thousands missing, the state government has decided to register and maintain a detailed record of kanwariyas when they visit Haridwar and Rishikesh during the holy month of Sawan.
Addressing a meeting of civil and police officials from neighbouring states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi in Haridwar, Garhwal Commissioner Subardhan said the Kanwariyas must be registered by the local administration when they begin their journey.
In case some of them are not registered, they can be registered on their arrival in Haridwar where six offices have been set up for the purpose, he said. The record of name, address and mobile numbers of the kanwariyas will be prepared and maintained during their visit the state in Sawan starting from July 23, Subardhan said.
Lakhs of kanwariyas visit Haridwar and Rishikesh annually during Sawan to collect holy water of Ganga river which they offer to Lord Shiva on the occasion of Maha Shiv Ratri.
