CHENNAI: Apart from the fun factor, many people here opt for a cool summer swim to stay trim. According to coaches in the city, summer witnesses a 10 per cent rise in the number of people taking swimming lessons — most of them being youngsters — with health the main driving force. For example, Tarun (10) of Anna Nagar took up swimming after his doctor told him he was overweight for his age and height and urged him to lose some flab. “The doctor said he could take up swimming,” informs Tarun’s mother Lavanya, as she sits by the pool and watches her son kicking in the water.Senior citizens suffering from orthopaedic problems too join summer camps in large numbers for aqua therapy. “I suffer from arthritis and I was advised by the doctors to start aqua therapy. I feel better now,” says 63-year-old Swaminathan.
