New Delhi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi disclosed on Wednesday that Manmohan Singh was her Prime Ministerial choice even in 1999 when she had staked claim to form the new government after the fall of Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led coalition.

"I think so," she told a private news channel in an interview when she was asked whether Dr Singh would have been the Prime Minister if her attempt to form a government had succeeded in 1999.

"Yes, in fact I went first by myself and second time with Dr Singh. Yes, that is true," she said.

She was asked to confirm if she had conveyed to late President K R Narayanan that if Congress were to form the government, Singh would be the Prime Minister.

Gandhi also said when the 2004 election results started coming in, she had spoken to Manmohan Singh about his becoming the

Prime Minister. "Yes, I did. I did speak to him," she said.

After 2004 election results were out, Congress Parliamentary Party met and elected her as the Prime Ministerial candidate which she declined and nominated Singh.
