THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala chapter of the 68th round of the National Socio-Economic Survey was inaugurated here, with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy making a call for an efficient and comprehensive survey.Inaugurating the survey, Chandy said that the importance of statistics and data could not be overemphasised. He said that the Five Year Plans, which were instrumental in driving India’s growth since Independence, depended on such statistics that were religiously compiled by the employees of National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) and other similar organisations. The data collected through such surveys provides a starting point for the Planning Commission and other planning agencies. Therefore, it is of paramount importance that the data collection be carried out efficiently and comprehensively, he said. The survey is carried out by the NSSO (Field Operation Division) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. The survey in Kerala is scheduled to cover 328 panchayat wards in rural areas and 232 urban blocks, spread across all 14 districts of the State. The door-to-door survey will be carried out by investigators of the NSSO and State Department of Economics. The survey, initiated in 1950, remains the only authoritative source of socio-economic data in the country and is heavily relied upon by all Central planning agencies. The information collected is kept secret and the compiling organisation is recognised all over the world and is credited to be one of the best in the country.Director General of the NSSO (FOD), J Dash spoke about the usefulness of the surveys carried out by the organisation and the statistics it compiled rigorously. Dash said that the survey was aimed at providing an accurate picture of the socio-economic conditions prevailing in the country. The Deputy Director General of NSSO (FOD), Subrata Dhar, delivered the vote of thanks.
