CHENNAI: The need to bridge the gap between the skills of SC/ST youth and the skill sets actually required to secure jobs in the private sector was the point of focus at a function to hand over certificates and appointment letters to students.State Minister for Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare N Subramanian handed over the appointment letters and Adobe International Certification documents to 38 students. The students had earned the certification after undergoing training at the Global Institute of Gaming and Animation (GIGA) of the Everonn Skill Development Limited (ESDL), as part of a project of the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing Development Corporation.“Students from a village background, especially SC/ST students, do not have skills necessary to make use of opportunities in the private sector. Government jobs are guaranteed by law. But private sector jobs are reliant on high levels of skill,” noted TAHDCO MD C Vijayarajkumar.“Lot of avenues are opening up in the private sector. We have to tap these opportunities. And SC/ST students need to be given the skills necessary to compete for these positions,” he added. Vijayarajkumar also noted that the State government was spending Rs 25 crore every year for developing the skills of SC/ST youth. The TAHDCO project was aimed at imparting web designing and basic animation tools for SC/ST students. The training was imparted by the GIGA, at Everonn’s premises in Perungudi. A number of students who spoke at the function on Tuesday evening said they had absolutely no computer knowledge when they started the 25-week programme. While 38 of the 100 students in the project chose to give the Adobe Certification a shot, a total of 50 found job placements in large corporations. Their salaries range from 3500 to 11000. A whopping 82 of the 100 were girls.ESDL CEO AM Thimmaiah express confidence that the students had learnt well and that the programme would go a long way to ensuring strong futures for the youth. “No job is good enough these days without international certification. With time and some on the job training I am sure these students’ skill and employability will grow,” he said.Adi Dravidar and tribal Welfare Secretary AS Jeevarathinam, Adi Dravidar Welfare Commissioner P Sivvasankaran, Tribal Welfare Director KV Giridhar and GIGA chief Peter Sebastian were among those present at the function.
