CHENNAI: Young Kirtana at the very start strikes you with her vibrant gestures in the manner of yesteryear singers. However, at the same time her complete involvement and self enjoyment are only too evident on stage, as you listen to her further the way she displayed her vocal skills quite effortlessly. The ten years spent under her guru Kalaimamani Dr Sunder has sharpened her music and it can be seen in her every phrase and note.Kirtana’s opening varnam in Sahana established her depth and intensity to make her singing glow radiantly. Bouli was an apt choice and her piece Thappuala of Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar showed that she could make a musical statement, equally well. Later Kirtana settled for Samajavaragamana in Hindoloam of Saint Thyagaraja. She gave this popular song the needed musical nourishment to make it rich and resonant.Raga Simhendramahyamam has a unique melodic character and when the lyric is that of Papanasam Sivan, it adds even more charm. She showcased a full understanding of the raga and lyrics, and offered her her own youthful stamp. It would certainly be no exaggeration to state that she poured her heart out.Ranganayakam in Nayaki of Muthuswamy Dikshitar, a favourite of the veteran KV Narayanaswamy, offered the singer a breather with his musical vishranti. When she embarked on the alapana of Sankarabaranam, she was so immersed in it that it went on for a long time. Kirtana was in her element when she sang Lalitha Darar’s Enil Knniada. She squeezed all the musical juice that could come out of it. Her concluding song Nirai Mugam, a Thirupugazh, was quietly devotional and an apt ending note to a powerful concert. On the violin, Karaikal Ventasubramanian was a matching violinist and his Sankarabaranam was particularly memorable. Also, B Srivatsan played with a good team spirit.
