CHENNAI: The owner of a silk store in Kancheepuram was arrested on Friday by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on charges of cheating a government official.According to police, the accused Sampath called Punniyakotti, an accounts assistant with the Tamilnadu Zari Limited in Orikkai, six months ago and told him that there was a vigilance inquiry pending against the latter with the Kancheepuram Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Department. Claiming that he could talk to the vigilance officials to clear the charges, Sampath demanded an amount of Rs 5 lakh from Punniyakotti. Punniyakotti then handed over the amount to Sampath, who assured that he would get the vigilance inquiry closed. On March 20, Sampath called Punniyakotti a second time and demanded another Rs 2 lakh, citing the same reason. When Punniyakotti requested that he reduce the amount, Sampath told the account assistant to cough up an advance of Rs 10,000 on March 21. After Punniyakotti responded that he would be able to arrange the money only in Chennai, Sampath asked him to meet him near the Marina Light House and hand over the amount. Following a complaint from Punniyakotti, the DVAC sleuths laid a trap on Wednesday evening and caught Sampath red handed while accepting Rs 10,000. House BurgledValuables worth Rs 3 lakh, including 12 sovereigns of gold, were allegedly stolen from the house of Andal, a private school teacher, at Ice House on Thursday.According to police, 12 sovereigns of gold, Rs 3,500 in cash, some silver articles and a small panchaloha idol were reported missing.
