ROURKELA: Except the inter-state bus services that kept off the roads, the Maoist-sponsored 24-hour shutdown call evoked little response in the bordering pockets of Sundargarh district, close to Saranda forest in Jharkhand. No untoward incident has been reported till now.The Jharkhand regional committee of the banned CPI (Maoist) outfit has effected the bandh in Jharkhand and three bordering districts of Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj to protest the killing of top leader M Koteswar Rao alias Kishenji. The shutdown ends on Tuesday mid-night, but normalcy would return on Wednesday morning. Owing to the shutdown all border police stations in the district are on high alert.Sources said bus services originating from Rourkela to Jharkhand and Bihar went off the roads and short distance buses plied till Bisra and did not venture to Jareikela, close to Jharkhand border. On Monday night as a precautionary measure, police had restricted movement of transport vehicles on the NH-215 in the Bonai sub-division. As per reports, iron ore mines of SAIL at Barsuan, Tensa and Kalta functioned normally, while mining operations in majority of private mines remained suspended for non-compliance of norms. Security forces manning the vulnerable pockets in the district have stepped up surveillance. DIG (WR) YK Jethwa said no untoward incident had been reported.
