Pondicherry: Pondicherry PCC president P Shanmugham announced that he would not contest the Assembly polls to be held in May.

He said that his duty assigned by the party High Command was to consolidate the party cadres and ensure that Congress returned to power in the Union Territory.

Shanmugham informed that so far 134 people have submitted applications seeking party tickets to contest polls. Although it was earlier fixed that March 15 was last date to file the applications, it has now been extended by one day as requested by the party cadres.

Chairperson of All India Mahila Congress Committee, Rita Bahuguna Joshi said women's literacy rate and implementation of various schemes in the Union Territory were impressive.

AIMCC secretary Kamalakshi Sharma said she would camp in Chennai for a few days to receive applications from women aspirants for party tickets to contest polls in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.
