Thiruvananthapuram: Until two weeks ago, 34-year-old Kiran Kumar had been living with a sewing needle — which had rusted over the years — lodged inside his body.

The Kerala resident was in Class 6 when he accidentally sat on the needle, which had fallen from a calendar onto the bed at his Malayankeezhu home in the state capital.

The needle got lodged in his body and he was rushed to the hospital but doctors could not find the needle back then. As the needle caused no major problems at the time, Kumar and his family sought no further medical help.

Nearly 22 years later, Kumar was reminded of the foreign object in his body when he experienced swelling and pain in the area where the needle had pierced his body.

He consulted experts at the Trivandrum medical college where an X-ray revealed the presence of the needle.

The needle was finally removed from his body after a two-hour procedure conducted by a team of doctors led by associate professor of surgery Dr Rishikeshan Nair, who said it is perhaps the oldest such case.

“It took us almost two hours to find the needle inside the body. Removing any foreign body is a complex surgery. Since this is a very old case, it added to the complexity. The needle was stuck inside the muscle area and since it is a vast area it’s difficult to find. We did it with the help of C-arm machine,” Dr Nair said.
