Severe Heatwave To Hit Northwest India As Delhi Records Hottest Day At 43.7 °C, Rains Likely In These States

The weather office on Saturday said that heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are likely to continue over Northwest India for the next five days. The extreme heat conditions are expected to continue in East and Central India for the next three days, the Indian Meteorological Department said.

The scorching heat is very likely in many pockets over Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi during till May 22 and in some parts of West Uttar Pradesh till May 19.

On Saturday, the temperature in the national capital reached 43.7 degrees Celsius marking it the hottest day of the season. A “red alert” has also been issued indicating that there will be extreme heat in many areas of the city over the next two days.

Rainfall Predictions

Meanwhile, very heavy rainfall is expected to continue over south India till May 23 with extremely heavy rains between May 19 to May 21.

Heavy downpours are likely to hit Karnataka during between May 19 and 22 and over Andhra Pradesh till May 21.

Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala will also witness rains till May 22.

In Central India, moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds are likely to hit Goa, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh on May 19.

On the other hand, Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Jharkhand will receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds from May 19 -23.

Scorching Heat Across the Country

The dangerous levels of heat this summer are breaking several records across the country. Eastern India and southern states bore the brunt all of April with prolonged spells of heatwaves. Intense heatwaves scorched Odisha and West Bengal for nearly 18 days in April continuing up to the first week of May.

According to IMD, the current spell of heatwaves may also impact Bihar, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand as well as East Madhya Pradesh where the humidity levels have also surged. The mercury is also expected to rise in Maharashtra. The ongoing summer was forecasted to witness an unusually high number of heatwaves partly due to the ongoing El-Nino conditions over the equatorial Pacific Ocean – when the surface waters are warmer-than-usual.
