With her win over Shahar Peer in the quarters, Serena Williams has become a major contender in the Australian Open.

New Delhi: With her win over Shahar Peer in the quarter-finals on Tuesday, Serena Williams has become a major contender in the Australian Open.

Having lost the first set, the unseeded American came back in the second and dropped just two games to take it 6-2. The third set was a see-saw affair with both players going neck-to-neck.

But the two-time winner Serena had come prepared to win. And she did just that, beating her 19-year-old opponent from Israel 3-6, 6-2, 8-6.

Czech Republic's Nicole Vaidisova also entered the women's singles semi-finals of the Australian Open. The Czech faces Serena in the round of four.

Vaidisova beat fellow Czech Lucie Safarova 6-1, 6-4 in the quarter-finals earlier on Tuesday. Vaidisova smashed eight aces as compared to Safarova's two and committed 15 unforced errors as agianst Safarova's 21. This is the second time Vaidisova has qualified for the semi-finals of a Grand Slam. She had made it to the semi-finals of the French Open last year.
