Chennai: CCTV footage accessed by CNN-News18 on Monday shows an old couple in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli driving away two burglars who tried to attack them with machetes.
Police officials believe that the burglars are from the same locality as, prima facie, it appears to be a pre-planned attack. Since the burglars’ faces were covered, the police are yet to ascertain their identity.
Shanmugavel, 70, and his 65-year-old wife, were in for a shock when two armed burglars entered their residence and attacked them. The couple showed immense courage to fight back and chase away the robbers.
The video shows Shanmugavel sitting in the verandah of his residence when suddenly a burglar, who creeps up behind him, throws a piece of cloth around the older man and tries to strangulate him. As Shanmugavel fights back and tries to get up, another burglar enters the scene wielding a machete.
Hearing her husband scream, the wife comes running out of the house and immediately starts throwing her slippers chappals at the robbers. While trying to fight back, Shanmugavel falls down from his chair, but manages to get up and continues to put up a fight. Both of them then start hurling plastic chairs at the two burglars, who are seen fleeing the scene.
The police have registered an FIR against the burglars under Section 233 and section 394 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
