The Hyderabadi, playing her third three-setter in as many matches, lost to Yaroslava Shvedova of Russia.
The match was a see-saw from the start with the first set going to the tie-break.
Sania won the first set 7-6 but after that her Russian opponent came back strongly.
Sania lost control of the game as Shvedova won the second set 6-4. Even though Sania showed glimpses of a comeback in the third set but it was not to be her day.
She went on to lose the third and final set 6-4.
