Jaipur: Bollywood actor Salman Khan on Friday got a temporary reprieve from a sessions court in Jodhpur. The sessions court has posted the next date of hearing for April 12.

This saves him from immediately going to prison awarded to him by a chief judicial magistrate in a 1998 'chinkara' poaching case.

District and Sessions Judge Yashpal Choudhary admitted an appeal filed on the actor's behalf against Chief Judicial Magistrate B K Jain's verdict on February 17 and ordered suspension of the one-year sentence and fine of Rs 5,000 imposed on Salman till its ruling.

Salman's counsel Hasitmal Sarswat argued in the appeal that there was no evidence relating the accused to the crime, the judgment of the CJM was pronounced without the prosecution proving its case beyond reasonable doubt and demanded that the sentence be quashed.

An application for suspension of the sentence filed under Section 389 of Code of Criminal Procedure requested the court that during the pendancy of the appeal, the sentence be set aside.

Choudhary admitted the appeal and ordered suspension of sentence and fine till the court gave its ruling.

The CJM's court had convicted Salman for the killing of two chinkara deer on the night of September 26-27, 1998 at Bhavad village while acquitting seven others, including actor/comedian Satish Shah.

The others acquitted were Kuldeep Singh, Mohammad Hussain, Yashpal Singh, Mahendra Pal Singh alias Rajubana, Dushyant Singh and M S Bhati.

Salman, Shah and other Bollywood actors and actresses were in Jodhpur for the shooting of the Sooraj Barjatya's film Hum Saath Saath Hain.
