“The recent mishap at a fireworks factory in Sivakasi, which was due to the mistakes of a few, could have been avoided. This underscores the need for safety at factories and, in general, all workplaces,” said Minister for Labour Welfare S T Sellapandiyan.
Speaking at a ceremony to distribute prizes for safe workplaces at a function organised by the Tamil Nadu Chapter of the National Safety Council, here on Monday, he said, “Safety at the workplace is of paramount importance.”
Earlier, on the occasion, Principal Secretary to the Government, Labour and Employment Department, said that every workplace must imbibe the quality of safety in their work ethos. “Safety ought to be a treated as a way of life,” while emphasising the need for safety.
The government had invited applications for safe workplaces in 2009 and 2010, following which it received about 70 applications.
This was shortlisted to 30 and after a scrutiny by the department prizes were distributed for applications received. Prizes for those received in 2011 will be distributed next week, said a speaker at the event.
P S Rajagopal and K Ayyanu, vice-president and president of National Safety Council respectively, were among those present on the occasion.
