CHENNAI: In an effort to develop urban infrastructure in keeping with rising population in cities and towns, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday announced an ‘Integrated Urban Development Mission’, under which amenities will be improved at a cost of Rs 6,654 crore. An official release here said all basic amenities, including drinking water, drainage, sanitation, storm water drains, roads, solid waste management system, parking facilities, bus terminuses and parks, will be set up under the scheme.In corporation and municipal areas, the facilities will come up at a cost of Rs 5,890.12 crore. Amenities in town panchayats will be improved at an outlay of Rs 763.91 crore. The total cost will be Rs 6,654.03 crore.In the first phase, in corporations and municipalities, drainages will be set up at Rs 30.50 crore and drinking water will be provided at a cost of Rs 58.80 crore.Roads will be repaired and new ones built at an outlay of Rs 145.11 crore and storm water drains will be built at a cost of Rs 88.96 crore.To safeguard the environment, solid waste management system will be put in place at a cost of Rs 124.54 crore. Streetlights and other related infrastructure work will be done at a cost of `58.57 crore. All of this put together will cost Rs 506.48 crore. Similarly, in town panchayat areas, all such facilities will be provided at a cost of Rs 250.80 crore during the first phase. “For the current fiscal, CM J Jayalalithaa has allocated Rs 757.28 crore under the IUDM plan to take up development work in corporation, municipal and town panchayat areas.”For the second drinking water pipeline from Chembarambakkam to Poonamallee Bypass Road, she has ordered Rs 40 cr, the release said.
