'Chipwrecked' can be decent fun for the kids.

New Delhi: Every once in a while there are these stunning, intelligent, sarcastic animated movies that have the power to entertain any adult. ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked’ is clearly not one of them. Directed by Mike Mitchell and written by Jonathan Aibel, Glenn Berger, Ross Bagdasarian and Janice Karman – ‘Chipwrecked’ is rather boring, it can only decently amuse the kids. Pixar has aced the adult-child comedy, Fox probably doesn’t want to try.

The chipmunks were adorable when they first came to the big screen – but now, on their third big screen adventure – the childish antics have become awfully run of the mill. It has been 6 years – shouldn’t the chipmunks grow up? A little at least?

In the third sequel to the ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ that hit screens in 2007 – the Chipmunks and the Chipettes are on a cruise holiday with Dave Seville (Jason Lee). They are on their way to the music awards where they hope to win record of the year.

As always – Alvin (Voiced by Justin Long) has zilch regards for rules. He makes the cruise ship his play ground and breaks every possible rule a chipmunk can manage to break. Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler), Theodore (Jesse McCartney), Brittany (Christina Applegate), Jeanette (Anna Faris) and Eleanor (Amy Poehler) can do nothing but try and control the extensive damage Alvin happily goes on wrecking. While Dave tries to flounder between being a dad to the chipmunks and trying to enjoy the vacation – Ex-Chipette Manager Ian Hawke is also on the ship as the ‘Pelican Man’ and is all set to make sure he ruins Dave’s life.

Long chaos cut short – the chipmunks float off the ship on a kite and are marooned on an island. Dave and Ian also follow suit. While the chipmunks try to survive and wait for Dave to come rescue them, Dave and Ian wander around the island aimlessly. The chipmunks bump in to a half-crazy woman Zoe (Jenny Slate) who has been on the island for 9 years. And like all island-marooned people – she has balls of various sizes for company with faces drawn on them. Thank you Tom Hanks – you are such a trend setter.

So begins the inevitable forced adventure where the 6 chipmunks try to fend for themselves in the wild, with just mangoes and coconuts for food, nasty spider bites and a crazy woman who actually is in search of treasure. And guess what? The island also has an active volcano which starts erupting just in time for the crazy bunch of islanders to escape on a raft.

A few life lessons, loads of the trademark Chipmunks song covers later – the movie is over. It has what the children wants and that is all it cares to have. So take your truant kids on a nice weekend afternoon and let them entertain themselves. As a parent – you will surely want to spank the ‘all-American’ chipmunks at good many moments. Lets just hope that your kids don’t pick up any new tricks.
