KOCHI: The Corporation’s plan to intensify road repair works on Monday when the roads would be deserted was crushed as workers failed to show up. “None of the workers showed up due to the hartal,” said T J Mathai, a contractor. The authorities concerned were planning to fill the potholes on major roads. However, Soumini Jain, chairperson, Works Standing Committee, said that all the pending road repair work would be speedily executed from Tuesday, assuming that the weather would be congenial. “The repair work on Chittoor Road will begin on Tuesday and will cover the entire stretch from Valanjambalam to Vaduthala. It is a Rs. 60-lakh project and will include proper tarring,” she explained. “Pothole-filling will be done on all major roads with tar patching or metal filling. If the dry spell continues, we will be able to repair all the roads by November,” she said. “The patch work on Pandit Karuppan Road will begin on Thursday. The materials required will be brought to the spot by Wednesday,” said Mathai. However, proper tarring of all roads would begin only after the funds under the People’s Plan are allocated at the meeting to be held early next year.
