HYDERABAD: With several concrete cement (CC) roads in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits not lasting long enough due to the poor quality of materials used, the corporation has decided not to let contractors use ready mix CC of their choice. Instead, they will be directed to purchase ready mix concrete from 15 empanelled firms. The GHMC has recently registered these firms based on the criteria for the same. Senior GHMC officials told City Express that despite spending huge sums of money for laying CC roads in the twin cities, many of them were crumbling within a short span of time as the contractors were procuring concrete at cheaper rates from little known firms. Apart from the financial loss, this is also giving nightmares to motorists and leading to accidents. The corporation has found that in many cases, the contractors took up the works by quoting less than 25 to 30 percent of the estimated cost giving rise to suspicions regarding their quality of work. If the contractors fail to purchase ready mix concrete from the empanelled firms, the corporation will take appropriate action including withholding payments.Besides, the GHMC officials will also check the concrete purchased by the contractors and the latter will be allowed to go ahead with the works only after they are satisfied with its quality. As an added precaution, the GHMC has also decided to go in for a third party assessment of the roads. It will have quality assessment wings for all the five zonal offices soon. Several organisations, including the Osmania University, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), CBIT Hyerabad, NIT Warangal and other government and private firms have come forward for third party quality assessment. The money would be released to the contractors only after the submission of quality assessment reports.
