NAMAKKAL: The life of a 12-year-old ailing mare was saved by doctors at the Veterinary College Hospital here on Friday by performing a rare blood transfusion. The mare had lost a lot of blood after giving birth to a foal. Head of the Department of Medicine of the Veterinary College Hospital here M Subramanian said that the mare became anaemic after giving birth and was brought to the hospital on December 19. “The mare needed some fresh blood and ten units matching the group of the ailing horse was drawn from another and was transfused into it on Friday,” he told Express.Dr Subramanian said, “It is normal to opt for blood transfusion in other animals, but is very rare in the case of horses. We did a similar transfusion at this VCH a year ago.” The mare, which gave birth on December 2, was being reared by farmer S K Narendran from Sankarandampalayam, Dharapuram. Narendran who owns four more horses, provided the donor horse, which is Kathiawari breed (Indian). “We were able to save its life as its owner brought it here on time,” Associate Professor Dr G Vijayakumar explained. He said that the mare developed bed sores as it was continuously lying on the ground. A soft bed has been prepared for it.”The doctors expressed the hope that it would be alright in a week or two. A team of veterinarians, including Dr Sivaraman and Dr Ponnusamy are monitoring the health of the mare.
