CHENNAI: With 230 instances of organ donations from October 2008 till now, Tamil Nadu is the undisputed leader in organ donations in the country. A total of 1,318 organs and tissues have been harvested. These have saved many lives. Yet, these figures are nothing but a tip of the huge iceberg of demand for organs. To drive home this message, MOHAN (Multi Organ Harvesting Aid Network) Foundation, a non-profit organisation working in the field of organ donation, organised a rally at the Marina on Sunday to sensitise people and encourage more donations.Over 500 college students, volunteers and supporters assembled on the sands of the Marina early on Sunday for the rally. Sharad Sharma, Chief General Manager, State Bank of India, handed over the baton to Mayor Saidai Sa Duraisamy, who flagged off the rally at the Labour Statue. While Sharma recalled the support that the SBI had been extending to the cause by donating a public education van to MOHAN Foundation, the Mayor underscored the importance of involving the youth in organ donation. PWC Davidar, Corporation Commissioner, was also present. All dignitaries pledged their support for organ donation by signing a symbolic donor card.Students from Loyola College, Agarsen College and Quaid-e-Milleth College, participated in the rally. A group of students from the Government College of Fine Arts put up a sand sculpture on the sands of the Marina on the theme of organ donation. Students of the Madras Christian College performed a street theatre show at the end of the rally.
