New Delhi: The ministry of railways on Monday said it had not made any proposal to serve only vegetarian food to passengers on October 2 as a mark of respect to Mahatma Gandhi.

Earlier, reports had suggested that a blueprint prepared by the railway board had proposed that no non-vegetarian food will be served to passengers on railway premises on October 2 in 2018, 2019 and 2020 when the central government has planned a special commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Besides observing 'Vegetarian Day', the national transporter will also issue tickets with watermark of Mahatma Gandhi's image, the reports had said.

Earlier this month, President Ram Nath Kovind chaired the first meeting of the National Committee for the Commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

An earlier version of the story carried the report of the railways planning to serve only vegetarian food. It has been updated to reflect the ministry’s clarification. The error is regretted.
