The Pune Police have been combing the Pashan Hills for clues where the body of five-year-old Shubh Raval was recovered on Monday after his alleged kidnapper, a teenage boy, panicked and strangled him to death.
The accused 19-year-old Parminder Singh, a hotel management student and his accomplice, a minor studying at the Army Public School hatched the kidnapping to earn some money. Singh, who has been sent to police custody till October 1, told the investigators that he needed the money for a motorcycle.
"They wanted to buy a motorcycle. So they kidnapped Shubh and murdered him," said Pune Police officer Ajay Kadam.
The son of a scientist couple at DRDO, Shubh was playing at the Ganesh pandal close to his home when Parminder Singh approached him and lured him with a chocolate, His accomplice knew the Ravals and was looking to source their number to make the ransom call, which was never made. A search operation followed a missing compliant filed by Shubh's mother.
"We searched the whole night. Around 2 am a youth living in the DSC Colony was questioned. He took us to the place where my grandson was murdered," said Shubh's grandfather Bishan Singh Raval.
Police say Parminder seems remorseless. He got the idea of kidnapping from a newspaper report and decided to demand a ransom to buy an expensive motorcycle.
Not only has the case shocked Pune, but has also underscored the growing culture of violence among teenagers.
