KOCHI: Protest against the attack on Tasni Banu, an ITES employee, is gaining momentum in the city. The local body as well as the youth wings of major political parties expressed concern over the incident and organised protest rallies in the city on Wednesday.The Kochi Corporation Council unanimously expressed its protest against the incident. The council also passed a resolution urging the state government to take stringent action against the miscreants and to ensure maximum safety to women. The resolution presented by councillor Suja Roy was supported by all the members irrespective of the political differences.“The council is much concerned about the rising number of atrocities against woman in the city. The council has asked the authorities to book the culprits without delay,” Deputy Mayor B Bhadra who chaired the council meeting said. She said that the police should take stringent action against the offenders and see that such incidents do not recur. The council also deplored the act of the police who let the culprits escape with petty charges. It was on Sunday night that Tasni Banu who was pillion riding on her friend’s bike to office for night duty was assaulted and verbally abused by a three-member gang. The DYFI also protested against the callous attitude of the police in not taking timely action against the accused. “After the UDF government assumed power, the number of assaults against women have been considerably increased. Unfortunately, the police are remaining mute spectators. The recent attack on Tasni Banu has exposed the attitude of the police,” said DYFI district president K M Riyas. He said that if the authorities fail to take action against the culprits, the youth organisation will have to resort to strong protests. The SFI is also planning to organise a protest march in the city on Thursday.
