CHENNAI: Madurai is likely to get new government dental college, Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr VS Vijay said on Friday at Prakriti, the Government Dental College’s cultural festival in Chennai.Acceding to a longtime demand from the dental fraternity, a proposal to establish a dental college in Madurai will be presented to the Chief Minister, Vijay said.At present, there is only one government dental college in the State, though there are 17 private dental colleges, he noted.The minister also assured the gathering that he would present, to the CM, the demand for a separate hostel for dental college students as well as a new in-patient facility at the college hospital. These demands were put forth by Dr KSGA Nasser, principal of the Government Dental college, Chennai.Being an alumnus of Madras Medical College of which the Government Dental college is a part, the minister fondly recalled his college days. He received a thunderous applause when he said would might press for more cultural festivals to allow students to de-stress. “Students pursuing professional courses undergo a lot of stress. I will recommend to the CM that students be allowed to have more cultural festivals for their holistic development,” he said.Responding to a query from mediapersons on the medical counselling dates, the minister said, “It will start on June 30.”
