HYDERABAD: In a bid to check autowallahs from fleecing public by charging exorbitant amounts, a prepaid auto service will be started at the Secundarabad railway station from November 24.The service to be run jointly by the transport, traffic departments and the South Central Railways will be studied and later it would be implemented at the Mahatma Gandhi Bus station and the Nampally railway station. The service would have been introduced a few months ago but was delayed as the relevant GO was not issued by the Transport department. A committee constituted by the state government and the passengers’ association has fixed auto fares to various parts of the city from the Secunderabad station. The officials are planning to set up six counters at the station to avoid delay in clearing passengers at railway station. Officials manning the counters will arrange autos to passengers by taking fixed charges from them. After the passengers reach their destinations, the autowallah would get his fare from the officer manning the counter.Officials said the system is being started to avoid cheating and crimes by unknown autowallahs.Transport minister Botcha Satyanarayana said this new system would be useful to passengers since generally auto drivers dictate terms at railway stations. He added that depending on the success of the service, it would be extended to other important towns.
