BHUBANESWAR: As per the directions of the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB), the Rourkela Steel Plant has shut down two of its units __ a sinter plant and a boiler. Last month, the Board had issued direction to close down the Sintering Plant-I and Medium Pressure Boiler-III of the Captive Power Plant-1. Both the units were shut down on Monday. The chief executive officer of RSP, who made a presentation before the OSPCB top brass here, informed the measures undertaken by the steel plant to bring down the pollution levels in both the units. As per the RSP action plan, the plant authorities said they had already restricted use of micro-fines, replaced both the exhaust systems and placed double-cone double-acting valves to prevent leakage in the Sintering Plant-I. Besides, the suction hood ducts have been replaced while steam injection over the sinter bed is being carried out to improve electrostatic precipitator (ESP) efficiency.Similarly, hearth layer thickness is being increased to reduce emission. The plant will use calcined lime shortly to ensure reduction of generation of sinter fines while the old ESP will be replaced by a new one by June 2013.In the MP Boiler-III, the RSP has begun to use 100 per cent premium grade low-ash coal. A new ESP will be installed soon at an investment of Rs 13 crore while steam load on this boiler has been optimised to ensure emissions are under the prescribed norms. Till the new ESP is installed, power generation will be limited only to the extent of meeting the critical load of the plant. The RSP also requested the OSPCB to permit operation of these two units since it had already conformed to the directions.
