Chennai: A video of a policeman slapping a woman amongst a crowd in Tirupur went viral on Tuesday. The police officer caught in the act was Pandiarajan-an additional deputy Superintendent of police.

This incident took place when over a 100 people were protesting against the shifting of a state-owned liquor shop from the highway in that area.

Remember, the supreme Court had recently ordered a ban on sale of liquor at National and state highways.

Following this, the locals protested demanding action against the policeman. The state government told the Madras High Court that action was being taken against the police officer and added that the licence to relocate a liquor shop stands cancelled.

The State Advocate General added that it was the protesters who pelted stones at police officers and a few of the policemen sustained injuries in the clash that broke out between the protesters and the police officials.

In the video, a police officer was seen attacking people and slapping a woman which resulted in a severe ear injury to her.

Eyewitnesses claimed that when an MLA’s car passed through the area, protesters attempted to block the vehicle.

The MLA, too, joined the protest and pledged his support on the anti-TASMAC agitation. But when talks between the residents and administration failed, police officials lathicharged protesters.

This is not the first time there are anti-TASMAC agitations in Tamil Nadu. Sasi Perumal, a Gandhian activist was fighting for total prohibition in 2015.

In 2016, every political party in Tamil Nadu promised to implement prohibition either completely or in a phased manner. So far, 1000 TASMAC shops have been shut and the state government is promising to implement prohibition in a phased manner.

With Supreme Court’s order, over 2500 TASMAC shops situated on national and state highways are also closed.
