KOCHI: Aimed at intensifying the drive against those who sell and consume tobacco products near educational institutions, the Narcotic Cell, under the City Police Commissioner, has decided to launch a special operation to book offenders.Anybody seen using tobacco near schools will be booked under the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products Act by the special police squads."The drive has been launched as per the direction of City Police Commissioner M R Ajith Kumar. We will monitor the sale of tobacco-related products in the vicinity of schools and will take action against those who indulge in it," Narcotic Cell Assistant Commissioner Joseph Saju said.The police have also decided to intensify their anti-smoking drive at public spaces, including cinemas, libraries, hospitals, hotels, tourism centres, educational institutions, shopping malls and government buildings.He said the special squads of the Narcotic Cell had decided to undertake surprise checks at cinemas to ensure that people do not smoke inside the hall during intervals."There are certain retail outlets which sell foreignbrand cigarettes that do not carry proper pictorial warnings. We will launch a drive to seize such products," the official added.
