THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Old water supply pipes are proving to be a nightmare for the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) once again. The water supply pipe which burst on Saturday evening at Ambalamukku affecting many areas of the city was two decades old, according to KWA officials.
KWA staff worked non-stop for hours before supply could be restored fully by Sunday morning. "The burst pipe was a cast-iron one. Such mishaps, in fact, happen quite rarely. Full supply was restored by 8 am Sunday," a senior KWA official said.
Hundreds of houses across the city went without water through Saturday evening and night after the 400-mm inter-connection line burst. The line connects the two major distribution mains from Observatory Hills and the Peroorkada main distribution line. The KWA had immediately shut down the distribution lines following the rupture.
"By 3 am, we restarted pumping," the official said. The ill-fated interconnection line had been installed to improve water supply to the thickly-populated Peroorkada region. KWA officials said that the burst was not linked to the work undertaken the other day.
Meanwhile, KWA has also launched work on another line near the Raj Bhavan at Kowdiar where a leak was detected. The leak, which developed on a joint, however, will not require a disruption of water supply for undertaking repairs, KWA officials said.
