CHENNAI: Activists of People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), went on a demonstration on Tuesday here protesting against what they claimed a cruel and often deadly spectacle of Jallikattu. Volunteers dressed as an injured bull sitting on a wheel chair and injured bull fighters spread out on the banks of Marina protesting against the cultural sport of TN.“The sport is a flagrant violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960,” said Bhuvaneshwari Gupta, Campaign Coordinator of PETA. “Terrified bulls are kicked, punched, jumped on and dragged to the ground in the process and the human participants and spectators are also hurt. Because attempts to regulate Jallikattu have failed, PETA has filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the Tamil Nadu Regulation of Jallikattu Act No 27 of 2009, a law that permits Jallikattu,” she added. According to PETA, the TN state law on Jallikattu is in contradiction to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of the Centre.“A state law cannot supersede a national regulation which clearly prohibits beating, kicking, torturing and inflicting pain to animals. PETA’s investigation into five Jallikattu events in January 2011 revealed that abuse is still taking place,” Bhuvaneshwari added. “In one four-day Jallikattu period in January 2011, 215 people were injured of which 154 were spectators and two died,” she added.
