Australia: A pet rabbit was credited with saving a couple from a raging fire that swept through their home in the southern Australian city of Melbourne early on Thursday.

The family pet, called simply Rabbit, scratched at the couple's bedroom door as they slept and woke the man up, Metropolitan Fire Brigade officials said.

The husband, whose identity wasn't released, discovered a fire in a back room and smoke spreading quickly through the house. Thanks to the rabbit, the couple were able to escape unharmed. The rabbit's owner, Michelle Finn, said the couple were "extremely lucky".

"I mean we've lost probably a lot of the important stuff, like personal photos and all of that sort of gear, but we're here," Finn added.

Nick Beagley of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade said it was the first time he'd heard of such a story. "I've got to say this is the first time that I've ever heard of a rabbit bringing a fire to somebody's attention," Beagley said.

The blaze caused substantial damage to the house before it was extinguished by firefighters.

Michelle Finn called the rabbit, "Our little fuzzy hero at the moment, very much so."
