CHENNAI: Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy on Thursday demanded resignation of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram over the “illegal” arrest of anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare.“The arrest of Hazare is not a collective responsibility of the Cabinet. Law and Order is the sole responsibility of the Home Minister and he should take responsibility and put in his papers,” said Swamy. The treatment meted out to a respected person like Anna Hazare has spoiled the reputation of the country, he said. “The government owes an apology to Hazare. As part of the atonement, Chidambaram should be removed,” he said.Swamy also demanded immediate dissolution of the Lok Sabha and holding of a mid-term poll over the “illegal arrest” of Anna Hazare and his colleagues. Swamy, the brain behind 2G spectrum case, said he would seek Chidambaram be named as a co-accused in the case along with former telecom minister A Raja during the court hearing on August 24. Interestingly, Swamy’s statement comes close on the heels of Raja’s demand that Chidambaram be made a witness. Raja had told court that Chidambaram, who was Finance Minister when the spectrum allocation took place, “cleared the sale of equity in Swan and Unitech, so he is bound to come to court as a witness”.To a query over National Minority Commission’s decision to serve notice on him over his article in a newspaper, Swamy said he is yet to receive such a notice.
