THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Vilappil panchayat will hold an all-party meeting to decide on whether or not to allow the treatment of existing waste at the Vilappilsala waste treatment plant. The decision will be taken before June 15 and it will be let known to the mediation committee of the High Court. A meeting of the mediation committee of the High Court held in Kochi on Monday has asked the panchayat to take a decision soon in this regard. According to sources, the mediation committee is known to have minced no words in communicating the need for a quick decision on the part of the panchayat on the garbage issue. The problem needs to be sorted out, the meetings cannot be prolonged for ever and a decision as to whether the panchayat will allow treatment of existing waste needs to be known soon, the mediation committee is known to have said at the meeting, according to sources. ‘’We will hold an all-party meeting and decide on the matter. A decision will be taken before June 15,’’ said Vilappil panchayat president Shobhanakumari. She said that the mediation committee has promised that no garbage trucks would enter the village but only a decision on the treatment of existing garbage was sought by the committee. Meanwhile, sources said that the next meeting of the mediation committee is scheduled for June 15. ‘’The meeting will take into consideration the opinion of the people of Vilappilsala, what to do with the existing waste, whether the information regarding the completion of the construction works and the so-called changes it could bring about could be taken to the people and so on,’’ sources said. Earlier, a sub-committee appointed by the mediation committee had held several rounds of discussions with the stake-holders and submitted a report on the issue.
