New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif are likely to meet on the sidelines of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meet in Russia on July 9-10.
Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesman Qazi Khalilullah on Thursday said a possible meeting could take place between Sharif and Modi when both the leaders will be in UFA, Russia for the SCO summit. India as well as Pakistan are likely be upgraded to full member status.
However, the ministry also said that there had been no formal contact between the two leaders regarding such a meeting. India too has maintained that there has been no formal contact between the two leaders on the possible meeting.
This comes almost a fortnight after PM Modi on June 16 called Sharif to discuss Indo-Pak ties. In the five-minute call, Modi told Sharif that he wanted good relations with Pakistan, sources had said.
The call was made after a war of words over Myanmar operations. Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore had said that military action in Myanmar to hit back at rebels who killed 18 soldiers in Manipur was a message to other countries.
Pakistan had warned India against undertaking such a strike on its territory. "India should not mistake Pakistan for Myanmar and our army is fully capable of responding to any adventurism," Pakistan Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan had said.
