New Delhi: After becoming a sensation in huge cities like Toronto and Melbourne, the SlutWalk finally took place in New Delhi on Sunday under the name of Besharmi Morcha. Close to 200 people gathered at Jantar Mantar to participate in the march to protest against society's perception that victims of sexual harassment ask for trouble by dressing scantily.
"We have students and a number of groups supporting us for the event. We will hold talks, stage street plays on the way to highlight the fact that what women do and what they wear should have no bearing on the way they are treated," said
Ritesh Sharma, a student filmmaker, who is one of the organisers of the event.
Prominent faces like activist Nafisa Ali and actor Gul Panag are expected to join them.
The protesters wanted to march to India Gate and Connaught Place in the heart of the city as well but were not allowed to as the police imposed prohibitory orders in the area.
The Slutwalk in Toronto which took place four months ago saw women walking the streets wearing striking lingerie and garnered much attention.
