BALASORE: The officials of United Bank of India’s Jaleswar branch in Balasore district are in the soup after cash to the tune of Rs 11.81 lakh was found missing from the bank’s ATM. The regional head of the bank on Thursday suspended two senior officials of the branch.Sources said while the money was stored in the ATM on June 13, on the next day `11,81,600 was found missing. Police said the computer showed the ATM was out of order and there was no transaction after the money was stored.Jaleswar sub-divisional police officer Santosh Nayak said police suspected the involvement of the manager and the deputy manager of the bank behind the disappearance of the money from the ATM. “The duo have the password of the ATM. When there was no transaction and the ATM has not been damaged, where will the money go? They might have taken the money or the crime has been committed with their connivance,” he said.Meanwhile, the police have registered a case under Sections 409, 420, 120 (b) and 34 of IPC against manager Sukadev Barik and deputy manager Gobinda Prasad Chand. “We are investigating from various angles and they are being interrogated,” Nayak said.Meanwhile, a team of officers led by chief manager Arabinda Das from the regional office of the bank at Bhubaneswar has arrived here for investigation. Regional manager Rajesh Kumar said both Barik and Chand had been suspended. “Though the money was found missing on June 14, it was confirmed when the team investigated it on Thursday. Investigation is on to ascertain the involvement of any other official in the matter,” he added. In 2008, three officials of the bank were suspended for allegedly misappropriating ` 23 lakh which was to be deposited in State Bank of India.
