Bhubaneswar: Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday ordered a judicial inquiry into yesterday's students' violence over the death of an engineering student in Bolangir town.
Official sources said a retired judge of Orissa High Court would investigate the incident.
Irate students went on a rampage in the town yesterday, setting afire the police stations, shops, buses and trucks and blocking the road by putting burnt tyres after one Shakti Prasad Mohanty, a second year student of the Sustree Institute of Technical Education, was crushed to death by a police van in the town.
They also ransacked the District Police Superintendent's office and attacked the police.
The student was returning home on a bike when the police van hit him near the Hugulipada Puja Mandap killing him on the spot.
Police had to resort to lathicharge and impose prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC to control the situation. The town observed a total bandh called by the Chhatra Congress and other Opposition political parties.
Meanwhile, one of the two students, who was seriously wounded in the police action and admitted to VSS Medical College Burla, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.
Naveen Patnaik expressed shock over the demise of two students and expressed his sympathy to the bereaved families.
The Chief Minister has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of the two deceased students and announced to bear the entire medical expenses of all students injured in the incident.
