Coimbatore: The family of a physically-challenged 38-year-old government official, declared brain dead after a road accident, has donated his organs providing a new lease of life to five persons.

One kidney each was donated to KG Hospital and PSG Hospital, the liver was given to PSG Hospital and two eyes to city-based Aravind Hospital, Chairman of KG Hospital G Bhaktavatsalam said.

P Balasubramanian, an accountant in a Central government office in Coimbatore who had only one arm, met with an accident on November 16 night while riding his two-wheeler.

He was rushed to hospital and then to KG Hospital for advance treatment, where doctors performed a marathon surgery on the left side of his brain, Bhakthavatsalam said.

The patient did not respond to another surgery the next day and was declared 'brain dead' after a scan revealed significant brain dysfunction, he said.

The first declaration of "brain death" was made at 9:15 AM on November 18 and the second around 3:59 PM by the Chief Neurosurgeon, Dr M Natarajan.

The multi-organ harvesting was performed at the hospital on Wednesday after Cadaver Transplant Coordinator CB Chandrasekaran convinced the man's wife and relatives of the need to donate the organs.
