THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Opposition strategy to pent-up the issues related to the unwelcome incidents in the Assembly and lock horns with the UDF on a consistent note is becoming clear with the continuing standoff in and outside the House. The sheer determination of the Left camp to go to any extent has become evident with the sudden announcement of a fast by the Opposition MLAs in the Assembly, in a rejection of the Speaker’s ruling to suspend two of their members on Monday. The entry of Kadakampalli Surendran, former MLA and present Thiruvananthapuram district secretary of the CPM, into the House in the evening and addressing the satyagrahis also proved that the Left camp could catch many unawares with smart moves. The roping in of hundreds of LDF supporters in front of the Assembly complex as well as staging a sit-in of LDF ex-ministers and ex-MLAs’ had given a rare dimension to the showdown, relegating all other issues which had sparked off the current spell of unrest in the Assembly such as the Kozhikode firing. “The UDF was keen to suspend the two MLAs’ at any cost and the Speaker seems to have gone by it, going by the sudden declaration while the Left was under the impression that Friday’s issue had been blown off after the morning discussions,” said a former LDF minister. As the fast goes on, the roads leading to the Assembly complex and around has been turned into a virtual fortress of the Left cadre, even during the late hours. The Opposition announced that the satyagraha would continue till the business hours on Tuesday, apparently to annul the two-day suspension period of the two MLAs. A heavy posse of police is standing guard in the spot to avoid any further untoward incidents. Two watch and ward staff suspended Meanwhile, two watch and ward staff of theAssembly were suspended on Monday for allowing Kadakampalli Surendran into the Assembly and meet the fasting MLAs.
