Chennai: For Chennai-based engineer Muthu Vijayan, a blind date turned tragedy. Vijayan had come to the resort town of Kodaikanal to meet a woman he had become friends with through the social networking site, Orkut, but ended up being murdered.
Police say the woman Vijayan had been chatting with did not exist at all and that some men used a Korean made mobile software - which makes a man sound like a woman - to lure him to Kodaikanal. When he arrived in Kodaikanal, they blackmailed him and demanded money. When he refused, he was killed.
Deputy Commissioner of Madurai, Thenmozhi said, "They used Korean phones which made them sound like a woman. This a lesson to all those who chat online and talk on the phone with such contacts. They should be aware of the risk."
The police say this is probably just one of many cases which has come to light. According to them, it could even be an online racket involving many more such culprits targeting people for money.
