CHENNAI: Officials have agreed to shut down TASMAC shop on Gowdia Mutt Road in Royapettah on Tuesday due to its presence close to religious and educational institutions. Activists, residents and BJP party workers were contemplating a protest outside the shop, but it was prevented due to official action.“The officials promised to close down the outlet in a week’s time even if an alternate site is not available,” said Satish Kumar, a member of the fish workers’ wing of BJP which organised the protest. The outlet shares a compound with the Gowdia Math. A church and a school also lie in the vicinity, which had upset the residents so much they came out to protest against the outlet in 2008 and it was closed down. The outlet was reopened in February of 2011, according to Satish Kumar, after which problems started to arise in recent times.
