TIRUNELVELI: Nursing mothers, along with their infants, on Tuesday joined the ongoing hunger strike against the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant at Idinthakarai. As many as 28 infants became the latest supporters of the cause after their mothers took part in the token huger strike for a period of two hours, with the message that nuclear radiation could pose a threat to infants and future generations.These women were resolute in their stand, according to anti-nuclear activist and Convener of Coastal People Federation M Pushparayan.He said that the mothers would not budge from their positions although they were discouraged from involving the infants in the fast. They insisted that they brought their infants with the message that nuclear energy endangers newborns as well, he said.On Tuesday, around 6,000 people took part in the protest, Pushparayan informed.The residents of 16 villages attended the meeting, which also saw the participation of the Naam Thamizhar outfit’s leader Seeman. While addressing the gathering, Seeman warned that if the government did not take measures to halt all work at the plant, he would lay siege to the plant with 5 lakh people.Members of the Social Democratic Party of India also turned up for the hunger strike.Meanwhile, DMDK chief Vijaykanth, on Tuesday, slammed the Centre for dragging its feet on resolving the Koodankulam issue, and raised apprehension that the Union Government was attempting to curb the ongoing struggle against the nuclear plant by using force.
