From social service to tapping their inner talents, it was a cheerful day for the volunteers of the NSS (National Service Scheme) units of engineering colleges of the state, at the Anna University on Monday. The occasion was the NSS Day Celebrations conducted by the National Service Scheme Cell of the varsity.
Earlier, various events were organised for the participants, including poetry, extempore, mime, street play and dance competitions and the winners were given prizes.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr S Selladurai, NSS programme coordinator said that NSS units of the state stand out in the nation when it comes to serving the society. There are about 38,000 students attached to various colleges in Tamil Nadu, he added. “The lake development initiatives by the NSS volunteers won laurels from the government,” he said.
The volunteers provided training to school students who were given laptops by the government.
Delivering his presidential address, Prof Dr S Sivanesan said NSS was a commitment and not an event.
While making a pitch for effective participation in such activities, he pointed out that as many as 3.5 million students are involved in it nationally. He also listed out the various activities NSS is involved in such as health camps and working with self-help groups.
Dean of the College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University, Prof M Sekar said that NSS volunteers play a pivotal role in rural areas.
