Now, Delhi Police raises safety concerns over Art of Living event

New Delhi: Days before the World Culture Festival on the banks of Yamuna, Delhi Police has raised serious doubts over the event. An inspection was carried out by senior officials on March 1. The report prepared by a DCP rank officer raises serious questions about preparation in safety arrangements. Though the Prime Minister is unlikely to attend the event now, the Delhi Police has shared its report with SPG for security of Narendra Modi.

The report submitted on March 2 to the Ministry of Urban Development, Art of Living and Lieutenant Governor, says that instead of seven pontoon bridges on river which were promised, only one has been prepared. It also stated that the work on the second bridge was still on and is being prepared by Army. A pontoon bridge at best can be used by 15,000 people in an hour. Not by 2.5 or 3 lakh‎ which are expected to attend.

The report also said that no wire meshing was found on pontoon bridge in the absence of which, there are fears that people might fall in the river in case of stampede or chaos. As per sources, who prepared the inspection report, the parking area was not developed and the approach road to parking bay was uneven.

Inspection report has raised questions over 'structural stability' of the stage. Till March 1, no structural stability certificate was given by either CPWD, DDA or Delhi's PWD.

Meanwhile, the Art Of Living foundation has gone into damage control mode. It has asked for support to build a biodiversity reserve on the banks of Yamuna.
