CHENNAI: B Gowrishankar (36), a final year M Tech student at IIT-Madras was found dead in his hostel room on Wednesday. The police inspector investigating the case said it was a case of suspected suicide by poison.Gowrishankar’s wife Geetha and two children were staying with his father Balasubramanian, a retired employee of Ashok Leyland, in Tiruvottriyur. “It was his wife, who sensed something amiss when he did not respond to her call to his cellphone this morning,” the police officer claimed. The panic-stricken family requested Gowrishankar’s friend Krishnamurthy to check his room.There was no suicide note and the body had been sent to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem.Upon receiving information about the incident, Gowrishankar’s father arrived at the hostel and later lodged a complaint at the Kotturpuram police station. Upon questioning, he claimed there was no family dispute. Inquiries were also being conducted with other students and faculty members to ascertain the motive behind the suicide, the officer added.Meanwhile, IIT-M Dean (Students) M Govardhan was not available for comment. In May, another M Tech student L Nitin Kumar Reddy, a native of Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh, hanged himself due to “depression caused by extension of his academic course”. His father Lakshman Murthy Reddy, a Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) official, had demanded a probe into the incident.
