Would like to see pachyderms at Kodanad Elephant Centre? No more perfumes and body sprays, please! Sensing an irritation among the captive elephants towards strange fragrances, the Kodanad Elephant Centre has requested the public to avoid the use of body sprays and perfumes while on a visit there.
The officials said that the visitors have responded positively to the request. “Strong smelling perfumes and sprays must be avoided while going near the animals. This is one of the directions that we give to the visitors. It is not based on any findings, but we speak the same from experience,” said Divisional Forest Officer Nagaraj.
The officials have started briefing tourist guides on why they should tell the visitors to avoid the use of strong-smelling perfumes while approaching the animals. The request has been well received, the officials said.
“There is a general observation that wild animals are highly sensitive to strong scents. The animals are not comfortable when they are exposed to such smells. Hence we are requesting the public to avoid perfumes and sprays when going for treks or wildlife trips. We have observed the same pattern here,” Sunil I P, forest range officer.
