CHENNAI: A little over 50 days have passed since an attempt was made to sabotage the Kanniyakumari-Rameswaram Express in Virudhunagar district, but the police are yet to make a breakthrough in the case. The locomotive pilot had heard a loud noise while moving past the Sittraru railway station near Sattur at 1.20 am on June 20. Railway officials and the police then visited the area and found two fishplates, 1 m in length, and two C-clamps on the sides of the railway track.Observing it as an attempt by anti-social elements to derail trains, a senior police official in Virudhunagar district, who inspected the spot, said trains could have derailed if they had crossed over the C-clamps.Thereafter, a special team was formed by the government railway police (GRP) to probe the incident. GRP sources said the act was the handiwork of people who were versed with the working of the railways. When contacted, Sunil Kumar, IG of the GRP, said patrolling has been intensified following the incident.
