London: Thomson Reuters released its list of the 100 most innovative organisations in the world. The list dominated by technology companies includes the likes of Apple, Microsoft, Intel, LG and Motorola. The struggling Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia is not amongst the top 100.
"Innovation is a means of growth and prosperity for companies and nations seeking to overcome sluggish economies and achieve competitive advantage," said David Brown, president of the IP Solutions business of Thomson Reuters.
The list is a part of the Thomson Reuters 2011 Top 100 Global Innovator program that analyses patent data and related metrics to identify the companies and institutions that lead the world in innovation activity. A comparison of market data for 2011 Top 100 Global Innovator companies shows they added more than 400,000 new jobs in 2010 over 2009.
Forty percent of the 100 companies on the list are from the US, 31 per cent from Asia and 29 per cent from Europe. Asia's representation is split between Japan (27 per cent) and South Korea 4 per cent). Despite China's lead in patent application filing volume, it is absent from the top 100 list. There are also no Indian companies on the list.
The Thomson Reuters 2011 Top 100 Global Innovator methodology is based on four principle criteria: patent approval success rate, global reach of patent portfolio, patent influence in literature citations and overall patent volume.
